Markel underwrites the Liability program that makes up an important part of the benefit of membership in the NIAAA.  Markel is rated “A” (Excellent) by A.M. Best’s rating service.  Markel has a strong history and reputation in such specialty areas as Sports, Recreation and School insurance products

Insurance Program General Description

What insurance benefits does my NIAAA Membership provide?
Your membership in the NIAAA includes a package of insurance providing you with excess general liability, excess directors & officers liability and term life insurance. These coverages are automatically provided to you as part of your membership dues.  There is no additional fee for this insurance program.

Who is covered?
All currently registered Athletic Administrators are covered by the general liability and directors & officers liability coverages with respect to their duties and activities as athletic administrators.

What Activities are Covered?
Members of the NIAAA are covered under the general liability and directors & officers liability insurance plans while performing the duties of an athletic administrator. Coverage also extends to Associate members when they are involved in some phase of school, or athletic administration in the United States or a foreign country, or as students or instructors in athletic administration

What is the Coverage Territory?
The general liability policy protects the members while in the United States, its territories and possessions; and while temporarily performing covered activities outside the United States.

What is Covered? 
The general liability policy provides coverage for claims or lawsuits that arise out of bodily injury or property damage during a covered activity. The policy also provides coverage for claims arising out of participant’s legal liability, personal injury, advertising injury and products or completed operations liability.  Defense costs are included in the limit of coverage provided.  This coverage is excess over any other valid and collectible insurance or self insurance plan.

Notable Exclusions:
The standard commercial general liability exclusions apply (such as War, Nuclear Energy, Absolute Pollution, Asbestos); in addition, liability arising out of sexual abuse or molestation is excluded;  the use of fireworks is excluded, and no liability coverage is provided to any member while driving any auto.

Directors & Officers Liability Coverage Summary

Excess Directors & Officers (D&O) Liability Insurance

Policy Limits:
$1,000,000 limit of liability per claim  
$1,000,000 aggregate per policy term  
$2,500 deductible  
This policy is written on a claims-made basis  
Defense costs are in addition to policy limits

What does a D&O Policy cover? 
D&O Liability protects the association and its members from claims arising out of wrongful acts or claims of errors and omissions. Some examples of D&O type claims would be those stemming from eligibility matters, discrimination or wrongful termination.  The policy specifically excludes claims that result from bodily injury or property damage. This coverage is excess over any other valid and collectible insurance or self insurance plan.

Who is covered? 
This program provides broad coverage for the NIAAA members.  The policy not only covers the officers and directors of the association, but also provides protection for any member but only while acting in an official capacity as an athletic administrator. 

Insurance Company:  
This policy is underwritten by Federal Insurance Company, a member of the Chubb Group of Insurance Companies, Warren, NJ.  Chubb is rated “A+” (Superior) by A.M. Best’s rating service.
